Flooting

Description

Flooting makes it fun to find bargains in your local area and super easy to find new homes for stuff you're done with. When something is listed on Flooting, we wrap it in a virtual bubble and float it around the neighbourhood on our game map. People looking for a bargain play a simple strategy game of catch the bubble to try and win it.

Flooting's game based approach offers some great benefits.

  • Stuff goes from free: if things are less popular, they go completely for free. if stuff is more popular people use points to help them try and win it. Points can be earned or purchased
  • It's super simple: to win everyday stuff is generally one click. if stuff is really popular some strategy and skill is required to play the game, which adds to the fun.
  • No payment issues: flooting gives the person listing an item all the points played to win it. this removes the need for person 2 person payments, making it safer and less hassle.

Havering London Borough Council

Description

Havering operates a weekly refuse and recycling collection. Residents are provided with orange sacks for the collection of paper, thin card, tins and cans, and plastic bottles. Cardoard can also be collected if flattened and placed next to the orange sack or loose inside an orange bin (orange bins are for flats residents recycling). Recycling is collected on the same day as the refuse but in separate vehicles. The orange sack materials are then seperated from the sacks and sorted at a Materials Recycling Facility in Newham.

There are approximately 60 recycling bring banks around the Borough collecting a variety of materials: glass, paper, textiles, tins and cans, plastic bottles, and paper based cartons. In addition, Gerpins Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre accepts materials for recycling, from paper and cans, to waste engine oil, garden waste, wood, and fridges, as well as waste items.

Terracycle

Description

TerraCycle is the world leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable post-consumer waste, operating in 21 countries around the world. TerraCycle works with major brands across the globe to collect used packaging and products that would otherwise be destined for landfills. It repurposes that waste into new eco-friendly materials and products.

The waste is collected through TerraCycle’s Brigade programmes, which are free fundraisers that pay schools, charities and non-profits for every piece of waste they collect and return.

TerraCycle launched in the UK in September 2009 (www.terracycle.co.uk) and runs recycling programmes for instant coffee packaging waste, biscuit wrappers, writing instruments, baby food pouches, air fresheners and home care waste, Tassimo TDISCS and cigarette butts and associated smokers' waste.

Over 25,000,000 million items of packaging waste have been dirted from landfill to date raising over £400,000 for schools, charities and non-profit organisations

Any interested individuals, schools and organisations can learn more about the programmes or sign up to a Brigade for free today at www.terracycle.co.uk.

Giveacar

Description

At Giveacar we transform your old, used car into valuable funds for a charity of your choice!

We offer a completely free service in which we organise your unwanted vehicle to be collected from anywhere in the UK. We then arrange for your car to be recycled, either scrapped or sold at auction, and then pass on the money raised to a UK charity of your choice.

All you have to do is register your vehicle at http://giveacar.co.uk/donate or call us on 020 7736 4242!

Not only are all the vehicles we process recycled, but by only dealing with authorised treatment facilities that follow all of the guidelines set out in the Environmental Agency’s End of Life Directive, we minimise the environmental impact of all the scrapped cars we process.

We are a not-for-profit social enterprise, and we work our absolute hardest to ensure that we receive the best price for every vehicle and therefore raise as much money as possible for each and every charity. Since launching in 2010 we have raised over £1.4 million for over 1,300 charities across the UK, and with your help we are excited to raise even more!

Motorwise

Description

Motorwise is an online referral service linking sellers of end-of-life vehicles with licensed recycling centres around the UK. Our network of recycling centres (also known as Authorised Treatment Facilities or ATFs) are licensed and regulated to recycle every vehicle to the highest possible standard.

We can guarantee that our appointed centres recycle at least 85% of every scrap car, compared to the industry norm of 75-80%. Our network of centres continues to make progress in this area and many will achieve the new level of 95% before the European target of 2015. This process ensures that the environment is not damaged through landfill.

Using the vehicle registration number and postcode for collection, via our website we provide free, instant online quotes for any UK-registered scrap, unwanted, problem or faulty car. Once accepted, the details are passed to one of our network recycling centres to arrange free collection of the vehicle.

Developing relationships with some of the largest and most established recycling centres in the UK means we can offer the best prices to customers.

All DVLA responsibilities are taken care of, providing complete peace of mind that the vehicle will be dealt with in an environmentally safe and legal way.

Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC)

Description

LARAC was formed in 1985 to represent the emerging voice of local government recycling officers. Full Membership is open to any local authority within the UK. We represent local authority views in waste and recycling issues, and we are run by an Executive of 20 local authority waste management officers. We have members from authorities in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales including associates from the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. Associate membership is open to any Local Authority with a waste function within the EU.

LARAC's vision is to be the leading voice for local authorities on recycling, waste and resource management.

Our mission is to influence UK waste policy for the benefit of our members in a manner which advances the waste and reource industry; to provide membership services in a cost effective and quality manner so that our members are well informed and to provide premier local authority national waste conferences that act as a catalyst for information dissemination and promotion of good practice within local authorities.

LARAC believes that all material currently see as 'waste' is in fact a potential resource and that it should not be disposed of by any means that does not recover a significant proportion of its value. Responsible stewardship of the environment is extremely important. Applied to municipal waste management this means that:

  • Waste generation must be stopped at source wherever possible and products should be designed for durability, repair and re-use
  • Discarded materials should be collected so that they can be recycled or composted
  • Where recycling isn’t possible material should be processed so as to recover useful stable organic material and/or energy
  • Use of landfill should be reduced to the absolute minimum.

London Re-Use Network

Description

The London Re-use Network is made up of charities, social enterprises, and non-profit organisations who work together to increase re-use across London.

We collect unwanted furniture, appliances and household items. These are checked for quality and safety before being refurbished and passed onto new homes.

The London Re-use Network aims to change the way people think about unwanted items. We want to show people that re-use is a great idea for their bank balance, and the environment as well.

Re-use can help us to protect the environment and support our communities. By re-using goods we are stopping great products from being sent to landfill or for incineration. Re-use is helping to create jobs and volunteering opportunities in your local area. We provide training in furniture repair, administration and retail skills, helping people back into work.

National Community Wood Recycling Project

Description

The NCWRP was founded in 2003 to encourage and assist the setting up and continued development of community-focused wood recycling projects based on the award-winning Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling Project. The aim of these wood recycling social enterprises is to save resources by rescuing and reusing ‘waste’ timber that would otherwise be land filled, and to create sustainable jobs and training and volunteering opportunities for local people - especially those who might find it more difficult to enter/re-enter the labour market. The website is packed with lots of information invaluable to those who want to start a project and is regularly updated.

WRAP

waste, information, sustainable, circular, economy, reduction, economic, business, advice

Description

WRAP’s vision is a world where resources are used sustainably. Its work helps people recycle more and waste less, both at home and at work, and offers economic as well as environmental benefits.

WRAP works with a wide range of partners, from major UK businesses, trade bodies and local authorities through to individuals looking for practical advice. WRAP always aims to work together with others to achieve the best results.

WRAP has clear guiding principles:

  • A focus on preventing waste;
  • Getting good value for money for the tax-payer and proving it;
  • Working in partnership and supporting the work of others;
  • Being flexible and business like.

WRAP supports a circular economy. A circular economy is about valuing products differently and creating a more robust economy in the process. By assessing how we design, make, sell, re-use and recycle products we can determine how to get the maximum value from them, both in use and at the end of their life.

Wrap is funded by all four governments across the UK and the EU and runs programmes in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Out of the Dark

Description

Out of the Dark is a charitable social enterprise that recycles, restores and revamps salvaged furniture as a means to train, educate and employ young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

At the heart of Out of The Dark lies the premise of creating an extended family. Not only is the enterprise run as a family business, all young people involved are welcomes into the fold and become part of the family.

Founded by Jay and Jade Blades, Out of the Dark is an extension to Street Dreams, the charity that they have been running for the past 13 years.

Their charity's projects are all about supporting young people achieve a better life and steer away from crime, and this project brings in the element of craft, DIY and work skills. Not to mention the development of self esteem and confidence.

Their personal experience of rebellion and hardship in teenage years coupled with professional backgrounds in building, carpentry, interior and textile design has been the right mixture to make Out of the Dark a success.

Jay and Jade met at Bucks New University where Jay was studying a BSc in Criminology and Philosophy and Jade was studying a BA in Textiles Design and Art. They starting running youth projects whilst studying and over the years have built a charity that is supported by a board of trustees, volunteers and 13 ex project participants who are now paid workers.

Plastic doesn't biodegrade. Using a material with a lifespan of centuries to make throw-away products means plastic trash is increasing exponentially. It is damaging the environment, polluting the sea, maiming or killing animals and fish. It is expensive to dispose of and the chemicals used in and released by plastic are potentially lethal.. and these are just some of the problems.

Visit the site for everything from the latest scientific reports on plastic pollution to quick tips for cutting trash, reviews of natural, biodegradable alternatives and composting tips to recipes for homemade, organic sunblock.
