But each contribution will be meaningful, surprising, felt. We welcome new readers and new authors.

We and our readers want to be inspired and challenged by cultures, practices and stories of places that may presently be going untold.

Frontline Club

Description

Whether it’s eating, drinking and conversation, or debate, training and films, the Frontline Club offers everything you could want from a media club. With its history rooted in the freelance video news industry, the Club has drawn together a diverse group of people who share a passion for current affairs.

Set up by Vaughan Smith in 2003 in honour of colleagues at the Frontline News Television agency who died pursuing their work, the Frontline Club celebrates its history with a selection of artefacts and memorabilia and a permanent photographic exhibition that includes iconic images from some of the world’s finest photographers, including Robert Capa.

As well as the private club room, which has internet access, newspapers and a selection of magazines, there are also seven bedrooms available to members.

Food is served in the club room and the ground floor holds an award-winning restaurant. Both the club room and restaurant menus include British classics with much of the produce supplied by Vaughan Smith from his Ellingham Farm in Norfolk.

The second floor houses the events room, used for the Frontline Club’s packed programme of debates, and documentary and film screenings which bring together many of the world’s best journalists, photographers, filmmakers and thinkers.

The events programme is run by the Frontline Charitable Trust, set up to promote independent journalism and provide training in the safety of journalists and other media workers in areas of conflict.

East London Radio

Description

We are a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, providing radio training to our local community and producing radio programmes for broadcast through our website.

We base ourselves in accessible unused rooms, often inside community buildings, across East London, within easy access of as much of the community as possible.

Our studios are built, where possible, from recycled/reused equipment and materials. Our first studio includes wood from the former Olympic site.

ELR is delighted to work with and promote individuals, community groups and charities from our area. We are keen to promote a positive image of this area which since 2012 has been more under the spotlight and is going through massive change.

We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, and offer training to build a passion into a radio programme. Such as - like gardening? - how could that become a gardening programme?

As we expand, we will need more small premises for studios, to ensure we improve our reach across the boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Barking & Dagenham and Havering.

Our mission is to become a reliable local news source, giving East Londoners a voice and sense of being part of an amazing area.

Green Wednesdays by Nice and Serious

Description

You love documentaries, have a passion for ethical issues, and are more bored on a Wednesday night than a tree-hugger in a desert!

Well the good folks behind green and ethical film production company Nice and Serious have created just the event for you... Green Wednesdays. It’s a film screening initiative for ethical-thinkers interested in viewing the latest thought-provoking documentaries about environmental and social issues. This green screening event is held in the fantastic Dana Centre at the London Science Museum and always features an engaging Q&A after the film with the film's production team and a subject expert.

Now, because we think great film should be accessible to all, Green Wednesdays is free to attend. The problem is, there isn’t room for every Tom, Dick and Harry as spaces are limited, so get your skates on and sign-up to the next event now to reserve your seat!

Artsadmin

Description

Artsadmin makes art happen. Our vision is to be an arts lab for the 21st Century for the creation of performance, site-specific and interdisciplinary work, where the innovative, experimental and unusual are nurtured.

We believe that artists and arts organisations have an important role to play in exploring, communicating and taking practical action against issues around climate change and the environment.

We work with artists and activists, supporting grassroots activity as well as commissioning and producing particular projects and have also taken steps to make the way we work more sustainable, both at our Toynbee Studios home and in the projects we produce all over the world.

We produce a biennial festival, Two Degrees, which focuses on climate change and consumerism. We hold regular Green Drinks events in our Arts Bar & Café.

Growtheatre CIC

Description

Growtheatre is a theatre company with a difference: we develop theatre inspired by our environment and landscape, bringing about a greater sense of community and belonging.

Our youth theatres and projects provide a space for children and young people to develop the skills they are going to need to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our focus is to create theatre inspired by local, outdoor spaces (be it an urban landscape, ancient woodland, city park or rural countryside).

During the making of each show or event, the young people have an opportunity to learn practical as well as communication skills. Props are built and performance areas constructed in trees, disused clothing is transformed into costumes, words and stories are woven from the place we find ourselves working.

Taking an outdoor space as a starting point, we explore the context in which it has developed as well as the new stories it has to share. People shape places and this interaction is a rich starting point to create exciting theatre. This means that young people who make theatre with us create work based on the past, the present, the future or the never before imagined! By doing this, we hope that young people grow to understand the integral part we all play on our environment.

The Albany

Description

Based in the heart of Deptford, the Albany is a performing arts centre with a history stretching back to the nineteenth century. Over the last few years, we have emerged as a new type of arts venue, very much driven by the cultural diversity and creative mix of South East London. Involving people, through participation and partnerships, is central to our work and is essential to the delivery of our vision.

During the last year over 180,000 people visited the Albany and used our facilities, including audiences of over 40,000 for more than 400 events. The Albany has four performance spaces, including its unique central performance space, with a capacity of 300 seated and 500 for standing events. Our programme encompasses a range of music, theatre and spoken word, as well as an array of participatory projects. Our other facilities include a café bar, rehearsal and meeting rooms for hire, and office space.

The Albany is re-establishing itself as a significant London arts venue, building on our reputation as a home and seeding ground for creative development in the performing arts. We are a social enterprise, earning over 50% of our own income and we are grateful for the support of the London Borough of Lewisham and Arts Council England.

The Albany is proud to be an ecovenue, endeavouring to continually improve our performance and minimise the impact of our activities on the environment.

Beyond Borders Scotland

Description

Beyond Borders Scotland is an Edinburgh-based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to facilitating small-nation dialogue and international cultural exchange.

Each year, we run a festival at Traquair House in the Borders called Books, Borders and Bikes. This year (2013) it runs from the 16th to 18th August. The festival brings together authors, politicians, cultural leaders and artists from all over the world for a weekend of panel debates on a number of topical global and national issues, literary walks around the grounds of Traquair and cycle rides in the surrounding area.

This year's speakers include Sir Kieran Prendergast, Tessa Tennant, Robert Wild and Tom Burke. They will be discussing issues such as the importance of protecting Scotland's woodlands, Scotland's ancient natural sites and we will also have a Talking Science event in partnership with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh exploring Traquair's historic landscape.

Electric Pedals

Description

Electric Pedals uses the energy from people cycling to generate electricity for events & permanent installations ranging from outdoor cinemas, educational workshops, music stages, outdoor classrooms in schools, phone-charging at festivals and many more. We can power almost anything! All of this without using a single battery.

Pedal power is not only a clean & fun method of generating electricity, it's also an amazing way to promote sustainability, exercise and energy appreciation.

We design and build everything at our workshop in the Bussey Building in Peckham, London. You can hire us for an event or buy our equipment to keep for your own bike-powered activities. We've worked with companies from Uruguay to more locally in SE London teaching people about the benefits of pedal power. We're always looking to develop our educational workshops so if you want to learn more about how our kit works, get in touch.
