Denmark Farm Conservation Centre

Description

Denmark Farm Conservation Centre is located in the heart of rural West Wales, within easy reach of the coast, market towns and travel options, yet remote enough to see the stars, hear the leaves in the trees and enjoy the freedom of our 40 acre site.

Wildlife is at the heart of everything we do, from our campsite to our easy trails and nature-watching hides, and from our training courses to facilities for your own events.

We offer a range of opportunities for you to enjoy, learn and discover side by side with nature. It’s astonishing to realise that, 25 years ago, Denmark Farm was an intensive livestock farm, with little wildlife. Today, the natural paradise that you will find here is rich in flowers, birds, butterflies, dragonflies and other animal life. Incredibly, this restoration has been achieved by working with nature, without any major inputs or capital expense.

Come and see for yourself……if you love nature then you will love Denmark Farm!

Ecodharma Centre

Description

The Ecoharma Centre is situated in a beautiful and wild part of the Catalan Pyrenees. We offer courses, events and retreats which support the realisation of our human potential and the development of an ecological consciousness honouring our mutual belonging within the web of life – drawing on the Buddhist Dharma and the emerging ecological paradigms of our time.

Our courses and retreats take place in a context of sustainable low-impact living, closely woven within the web of elemental nature. These meditation retreats, study seminars and training camps are intended to help people to empower themselves to make changes in themselves and the world consistent with a life-affirming vision.

We seek to develop practices which honour the inseparability of the transformation of the self and the world; to support the shift from a destructive industrial growth society to a life-affirming future; to contribute to the creation of a movement of renewal and resistance; to evolve spiritual practice where courageous compassion and a deepening realisation of our radical interconnectedness helps us to live in solidarity with life.

Orchard Barn Environmental Education Centre

Description

Off grid, low-tech, award winning environmental education centre in rural Mid Suffolk - specialising in natural and traditional building courses on practical conservation projects. We source trees from local woods and clay from under our feet and use human energy/low tech approaches to convert them into useful building materials with high embodied carbon, that’s low impact on the environment. This is the way vernacular buildings were constructed. Every part of our buildings could be reused. In fact, much of our timber frame is already on its second and third life. We are learning from the past how to create a greener future.

Our compost toilet facilities are in the old orchard. We harvest rainwater off our roof. We use a bike-powered generator to power up presentations.

Orchard Barn is run by OBee Community Interest Company who over the last seven years have run conservation courses that have enabled them to renovate the 17th century timber frame barn. All 20,000 oak shingles on our new roof were hand-cleft on site. We’ve also hand-made cob walls, beaten earth floors, wattle and daub walls and clay/lime render.

At Orchard Barn, we offer hobby, professional, community and bespoke courses.

See www.orchardbarn.org.uk for course programme.

Green Woodwork with Treewright

Description

Green woodwork courses held throughout the year: spoon carving, an introduction to green woodwork, rustic stool making, tool sharpening, one to one; all by arrangement to suit you in our woodland field near Epping Forest or at Waltham Abbey in my studio workshop. Friendly, fun courses are suitable for everyone over ten. You’ll learn how to use hand tools in a safe, constructive way and go home with a goody bag of things you've made by yourself from logs of wood.

I have an extensive range of fun and functional woodwares for sale. All made by myself from local green timber (I can tell you exactly where it came from!) or reclaimed timber all of which would otherwise be burnt as firewood, chipped or sent to landfill sites.

If you're looking for a sensibly priced, beautiful, one off gift then I can offer you a Hazel twig whistle or a Silver Birch drinking goblet, or perhaps a professional rolling pin from Sycamore to go with individual spoons and spatulas. Maybe you need a backscratcher, toothpick box or a drop spindle; if it's made from wood then I could be the artisan for you.

I can offer a personalised gift certificates for courses and woodware products for the recipient to make their own choice.

Workshops, talks and demonstrations for your club, school, party or event.

Coppicewood College

Description

Coppicewood College a force for sustainable good. Learn the traditional methods of woodland management and craft with us.

We offer a range of courses from one day to six months covering all aspects of sustainable ethical woodland skills. We teach in our own working woodland set in the beautiful Teifi Valley, near Cilgerran. Our Instructors have many years of experience between them and many of our students have gone on to create their own woodland based business.

We use hand tools such as felling axes, bill hooks and two-handed cross cut saws, etc, which we believe are the most efficient way to manage coppice. We insure that students become competent not only in their use but their maintenance. We offer low course fees and also bursaries to deserving students wishing to take our Woodland Skills Course. We also have a happy band of volunteers who meet every Wednesday supporting the college and enjoying working in a woodland setting. For full details visit the website.

There are many woodlands in the UK that are neglected. We believe that by passing on our skills and expertise many of these can be bought back into use providing essential materials for humans and a rich diversity for wildlife.

Pestalozzi International Village Trust

Description

For forty years the Pestalozzi International Village has educated young people from low-income families in developing countries. Its work in the UK is based on the principles of the Swiss philosopher Johann Pestalozzi, who believed in educating the whole person: 'the head, heart and hands'. Its students come to the Village, aged 16-plus, and take the two-year International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma course, run in conjunction with Hastings College of Arts & Technology. This is a demanding and internationally recognised university entrance qualification, which includes community service: the Pestalozzi students work closely with local schools and community groups, helping to build bridges of international understanding and co-operation.

This combination of academic study with practical and community work fulfils the Pestalozzi philosophy and helps prepare the young people to play an important role in their home communities in later life.

Environmental Change Institute

Description

ECI is an interdisciplinary unit administered within the Oxford University Centre for the Environment that undertakes research on environmental issues, teaches an MSc in Environmental Change and Management, and fosters university-wide networks and outreach on the environment.

Founded 1991 through benefactions, ECI was designed to answer questions about how and why the environment is changing and how can we respond through public policy, private enterprise, and social initiatives.

ECI research and teaching is characterised by a focus on global and regional environmental change, through projects that bring together the natural and social sciences, and by an orientation to applied and public policy. The research is grouped around three interlocking themes: Climate, Ecosystems, and Energy. Many research projects have a goal of influencing and informing public policy and decisions about the environment. The Institute is also promoting research initiatives and fostering collaborations in the fields of food and water.

Uniquely in the UK, the ECI is playing a lead role in the Government’s three major climate and energy research initiatives: UK Climate Impacts Programme, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, and the UK Energy Research Centre. ECI’s cross-disciplinary innovation has been acknowledged in it becoming a founding partner of Oxford’s £60m James Martin 21st Century School.

Most ECI staff are full time researchers and scientists working on specific externally funded projects within these research themes although we also host a number of senior research fellows working more independently on cross-cutting issues.

Since then it has grown rapidly, leading to the formation in 2007 of the Graduate School of the Environment (GSE). The GSE now offers several high-standard programmes at postgraduate level.

Based in the Wales Institute for Sustainable Education (WISE), the Graduate School at CAT is a world class training centre with over 35 years expertise in sustainability practice. GSE offers unparalleled teaching and accommodation facilities, including:

WISE is a state of the art eco-educational facility. Oxford Martin School

Description

The Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford is a world-leading centre of pioneering research, debate and policy for a sustainable and inclusive future.

The great challenges of our time - such as rapid globalisation, population growth, emerging pandemics, or climate change - share one feature.

All refuse to sit neatly within traditional academic disciplines. This common factor makes these challenges difficult to grapple with, whether as individuals, businesses, or governments, and therefore for societies as a whole.

The University of Oxford’s response is the Oxford Martin School. No other university, anywhere in the world, hosts a research organisation like the Oxford Martin School. Its community of more than 200 researchers, from Oxford and beyond, are working to address the most pressing global challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

Each research programme brings together academics from more than one field to create the collaboration needed for studying and tackling complex global issues. With more than 20 programmes, subjects are as diverse as the future of the global food system, geo-engineering, human rights of future generations and innovation in healthcare.

The Oxford Martin School was founded in 2005. It was made possible through the vision and generosity of Dr James Martin (1933-2013), who established the school with the largest benefaction made to Oxford in its history.

Envision London

Description

A groundbreaking educational programme that inspires and enables young people to make a difference in their schools and local communities. Our programmes provide hands-on support for young people in schools and colleges on issues relating to citizenship education, sustainable development and the local community.

Envision was set up by four young people in 2000 to challenge the stereotype of ‘the youth’ as apathetic and disengaged with the issues going on around them. Today Envision’s flagship programme supports 16-19 year olds from over 130 schools and colleges in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds and London. We also operate satellite schools in Cardiff, Essex, Oxford and Walsall. Last academic year we worked with over 4000 young people across the country across all of our programmes.

Envision programmes help young people to design their own local community projects tackling issues ranging from street crime to climate change. Our programmes seek to provide individuals with a powerful and rewarding experience of making a positive difference. Thereby inspired by their experience, these people will be both willing and able to continue acting as effective role models for their communities wherever they are building powerful legacies of their own.

We have a wealth of experience working with groups of young people to facilitate practical projects that have a positive impact on the young people, their schools and the wider community. We also provide Active Citizenship Workshops for higher education institutions and INSET days for teachers as well as working with businesses and community partners to support young people in building their employability skills and confidence.

En-Spiral

Description

En-Spiral, the renewables, energy and low-carbon recruitment specialist.

Energy, environmental services and the built environment are not only fast-growing sectors - they're also becoming more and more connected. We saw that companies in the UK would benefit from being able to find first-class people and recruitment services from a single, experienced provider.

En-Spiral was founded by people with a passion for the environment and deep, long-standing industry experience; we've got the contacts and expertise to match people and jobs quickly and effectively.

We take a consultative approach that helps us innovate to identify and source scarce skill sets for hard-to-fill roles. And we recognise that in a global marketplace, our clients need to be able to draw candidates from all over the world.

Not everyone wants the same recruitment solution. We can manage recruitment for you, provide a 'vendor neutral' option or even a white-label, managed solution. Our aim is to make sure you get the people - and the jobs - you need.

Big-company resources - We're backed by HCIG, a Human Capital company whose marketing, business development and back-office capability means we can direct big-company resources at your recruitment issues while providing a close, personal service.

Oxford Adaptation Academy

Description

The Global Climate Adaptation Partnership offers practical and innovative Adaptation solutions that are shaped around climate vulnerability, socio-economic impacts and long term vision.

Our experts understand the uncertainties of climate change and the unique aspects of the target region to provide relevant analysis of the costs and benefits of climate change adaptation, select appropriate adaptation options, build a customised adaptation knowledge tool, to train clients in best leadership and innovation to find the most appropriate adaptation solutions.

The Oxford Adaptation Academy is a joint venture between the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment at Oxford University, and the Global Climate Adaptation Partnership. A three week long course it exposes climate practitioners to the links between climate science, vulnerability and decision making. Now in its sixth year it successfully offers a participant driven, professional training programme designed around practice.

Organisations that have sent participants include: UNFCCC for three consecutive years; major development banks (Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, Inter-American Bank 2013/2014) UNDP, government as well as international NGOs such as Practical Action Nepal.

See the website for programme, testimonials etc. It will take place from 9-28 August, 2015 and is receiving applications now.
